BitTorrent extension lets users earn Tron tokens through seeding door
BitTorrent Inc has released more details about Project Atlas, which is to combine BitTorrent’s p2p network with the Tron blockchain. For example, seeders should be able to earn Tron tokens by making files available.
In a blog post and accompanying video, Project Atlas director Justin Knoll explains that the project is being run as an optional extension of the BitTorrent protocol. This means that clients that do not support the function will continue to be usable and that clients that do support the function can use it with each other. All clients can therefore continue to exchange files with each other. BitTorrent offers a second client in the form of uTorrent in addition to its own client of the same name.
Knoll lists examples of possible applications. For example, a downloader can pay a seeder with Tron tokens to achieve higher speeds. Seeders also receive compensation for keeping files available for longer. More details about the project should be released in the future. Using Tron does not mean mining is required, Knoll said.
Project Atlas follows the acquisition of BitTorrent by the founder of the Tron cryptocurrency, Justin Sun. Reportedly, an amount of 140 million dollars was involved. Sun previously said he had plans to reward seeders for uploading files. In August, it emerged that BitTorrent co-founder Bram Cohen has left the company. He did not disclose why he took this step.
