Bitdefender Announces Free Antivirus Package After Quitting Bitdefender Free

Three months after Bitdefender announced it would discontinue Bitdefender Free, the company is announcing a new free antivirus package. According to Bitdefender, this is completely built from the ground up.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows offers new features and an improved user experience compared to the previous free version. The new free suite lets users set when to run a scan and includes email protection for Outlook and Thunderbird. Also can the package detect exploits and warn users if their system is vulnerable, Bitdefender reports.

The announcement is striking because Bitdefender announced in December last year that it would stop Bitdefender Free. Support for this package will end on June 30 this year. The company then indicated that the free version did not meet its own high standards and the software developer also wanted to focus on multi-platform protection. Bitdefender said nothing about a new version at the time.

Now the company reports that the earlier version is based on an outdated platform. “The new Bitdefender Antivirus Free for Windows has been redeveloped from the ground up to detect and block the latest threats in today’s modern environments,” the claim reads. A Bitdefender account is required for use.
