Bitcoin is a virtual currency worth $50,000. The symbolic limit was already briefly reached by some exchanges on the night of Monday or Tuesday, but now seems to have or have had so much value on almost all exchanges.

Most exchanges show a price that is just under $50,000 at the time of writing. At around half past two in the afternoon, the symbolic limit was briefly reached there. 50,000 dollars is converted about 41,000 euros. It is a new record for the cryptocurrency, which has risen remarkably fast in recent months.

In early January, the previous records of $30,000 and $40,000 were set in quick succession. In mid-December, a bitcoin was still worth $20,000. In 2017, that was about the highest value of what was then a rapid increase. At the time, the price plunged back towards $9000 in a few weeks.

Bitcoin fluctuates a lot in value. In general, there seems to be an upward trend in value, but the difference can amount to thousands of euros in a few days or even hours. In recent months, more attention has been paid to the currency by institutional investors. The company MicroStrategy bought 21,454 bitcoins as an investment last year. Tesla recently also decided to accept bitcoins as a means of payment. Despite this, the practicality of the currency remains limited, mainly due to price fluctuations. The coin also has other practical problems such as the enormous power consumption.
