Beta Kodi 17 is available on the Microsoft Store
Kodi has made itself available as a Universal Windows Platform app with the Desktop Bridge functionality in the Microsoft Store. Microsoft itself actively sought contact with Kodi to convert the app via Desktop App Converter.
Initially, the Kodi team tested the conversion with Kodi v16, but decided that Kodi v17 beta should become the first Microsoft Store app for the general public. Still, for now, Kodi only runs on versions of Windows 10 for desktop and Surface computers. For example, “significant adjustments” still need to be made to run the app on the Xbox, the team writes on its blog.
Kodi v17 beta 2 is the version that is in the Microsoft Store and it will also get its updates through the Store until the final release. After that, the versions that make it to the store will remain on finals and betas will no longer be offered by default. In addition to the store version, the normal version will also remain available through Kodi’s own site.
Since the Anniversary Update of Windows 10, it is possible to run UWP apps via the built-in Desktop Bridge functionality. Recently, Microsoft put the first apps created via the Desktop App Converter in the Store, including apps like Evernote and Arduino IDE.
