BBC and Discovery start streaming service for nature documentaries
According to the Financial Times, the BBC and Discovery are starting a streaming service for nature documentaries together. The service, which may be announced in a few weeks, is reportedly launching worldwide except in the UK and China.
The new streaming service would be owned by Discovery and the BBC would license all of its nature documentaries, including those voiced by David Attenborough. Many of those series are also available on Netflix; whether they will disappear there when the new service comes out is still unknown.
In addition to BBC series, the streaming service would feature documentaries from Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and Science Channel. These are TV channels that are part of Discovery. The BBC and Discovery declined to respond to a request for comment, the Financial Times reported.
It is not yet known what a subscription to the streaming service for documentaries will cost. It is also not yet clear whether the service will appear in the Benelux. The Financial Times does speak of a worldwide release, with the exception of the UK and China.
