Bayonetta creator PlatinumGames is working on new engine

PlatinumGames, the maker of Bayonetta and Astral Chain, among others, is working on a new engine on which it wants to build its upcoming games. For now, the project has the working title PlatinumEngine.

PlatinumGames has always used its own engine, but according to the studio, a new version is desperately needed. The studio has put interviews on its site with its own developers, who talk about it. The new engine enables bigger games and makes them easier to make, according to the developers.

The studio has also tried existing engines like Unreal Engine, but says they don’t have all the features the studio needs. It is possible that those features will be added, but the team does not want to wait for that and states that developing and improving your own engine is therefore the best solution.

Ease of use is an important point in developing the new engine. This should make it possible for the developers of the studio to put together prototypes of new games and ideas for new gameplay with little effort.

The new engine has been in the works for two years. At the moment there are six to seven team members who focus on that, but the team says they can use expansion. It is not yet known when PlatinumGames will use its new engine.

PlatinumGames is known for action games such as Bayonetta and recently Astral Chain for the Nintendo Switch. The studio is currently finalizing The Wonderful 101: Remastered, a reimagining of a quirky game released for Wii U in 2013.
