AVM has released a new version of the router firmware FritzOS. FritzOS 7.20 is intended for devices with WiFi 6 support, among other things. The new operating system also has support for wpa3.

AVM will start rolling out the new firmware on Tuesday. FritzOS 7.20 was already announced last month, but is now available for all routers and repeaters from the German manufacturer. Among other things, FritzOS 7.20 has better security and the firmware also allows the 160MHz band used by Wi-Fi 6 on some routers.

FritzOS 7.20 has support for wpa3 for the encryption of networks. This applies to both the routers and the repeaters of the company. There is also standard support in the new firmware for dns-over-tls, so that dns queries are encrypted. AVM does not mention dns-over-https, the more commonly used alternative. The company states that with the new firmware, the speed of VPN connections will almost triple.

From now on, the new operating system will also work with WiFi 6. The user must have the right hardware for this. The FritzBox 7590 and 6591 Cable allow users to use two 160MHz bands. Previously, it was only possible to deploy two 80MHz bands via WiFi 5.

AVM also implements Oppertunistic Wireless Encryption in the firmware. This allows users to set up a hotspot where users can surf without authentication and with encryption. For home users, there are several new features in the OS, such as the ability to block certain devices on the network at once, and the FritzBox models 7590, 7530 and 6890 LTE will receive support for VDSL Long Reach, if the provider supports it.
