The German antivirus software company Avira has released a ‘safe’ browser, the Avira Browser. The software is still in beta and is based on the Chromium open source project and also consists of a mix of open source extensions and Avira’s proprietary technology.

The company writes this on its blog. Avira researcher Thorsten Sick states in the blog that despite the considerable work that is being done by the various browser builders and the time that is put into making the various browsers more secure, online threats can still be tackled more firmly. That is why the company decided to provide the open source browser Chromium with its own components, with which it wants to build a system that can also help the less experienced user to a safe(r) browsing environment.

“There are high-end security extensions, such as Noscript, but they are all aimed at experienced users, we want to build a system with an autopilot that uses the database we have and our experience,” Sick writes on his blog. Experienced users need not worry: everything can be circumvented.

The current test version of the browser is offered through the Avira Beta Center and runs on Linux, Mac and Windows.
