AUX by Facebook — A social music listening app from Facebook

Facebook’s experimental team has launched its own app to take on Turntable FM directed to school kids. This app is available in Canada only for now. Aux is the work of the’ NPE Team ‘ division of the social network, which was created to work on experimental new apps in July this year.

TechCrunch reported being a bit like Turntable·fm, a long-lost social-music service. Aimed at children and adolescents of school age who enter the app every day at 9 p.m. They then select the songs they want to play and compete for the “AUX” in order to get theirs first played. At the end of the night, a winner is chosen based on how many ‘claps’ are received.

It’s certainly interesting to see Facebook exploring social interactions around music in this way, although as its NPE Team announcement made clear in July: “Apps will change very rapidly and will be shut down if we learn that they’re not useful to people” –so if those Canadian kids don’t warm to Aux, it may not be around for very long.
