Automakers and network equipment makers co-develop 5G technology
Car manufacturers and network equipment makers are going to jointly research 5G technology for cars. In addition, they will work together to try to get 5G networks and 5G receivers in cars on the market faster.
The car manufacturers Audi, Daimler and BMW are in the partnership, while network equipment makers Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia are affiliated, the companies report. In addition, soc makers Intel and Qualcomm are involved in the 5G Automotive Association.
The companies will work together to conduct research, together they will try to standardize certain technologies and also want to jointly try to get 5G networks up and running faster and cars with 5G on the road faster.
Because 5g must have a lower latency than 4g, it must be possible for self-driving cars with 5g to communicate quickly with each other and, for example, to inform each other in time when they need to brake.
There are not many concrete details about how it will work. It is common for companies to work together to develop new techniques. For example, many companies collaborated on the development of wireless charging and the development of 4G LTE technology, for example.
