Autodesk buys Softimage from Avid Technology

Autodesk acquires Softimage, a manufacturer of 3D animation software, from competitor Avid Technology. With this, the package Softimage XSI comes into the hands of the Autocad developer, among other things.

Avid, known as a manufacturer of NLE software, will receive $35 million for the business. The animation software of the 22-year-old Softimage is used, among other things, in the game industry, advertising and media companies. Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4, among others, was partly created with the XSI toolbox. Softimage has also left its mark on the development of special effects in modern film. For example, the 3D software was used for titles such as Jurassic Park, Titanic, Sin City and 300.

Autodesk late know that Softimage’s product offering will remain unchanged for the time being. The company will also integrate certain parts of the Softimage software into its own packages, but Autodesk does not want to disclose details yet.
