Australian company launches tablet that runs Android and Ubuntu
The Australian company Vixtel plans to release a tablet that runs on both Android and Ubuntu. The device, called the Unity, has a 10.1″ screen, a quad-core soc and comes with a docking station.
The Unity was announced by Vixtel on its website, but the company provides few details about when the device will be released and what price to pay for it. As a result, it is still unclear whether the Australian company is considering a European release. Vixtel does indicate that it focuses on the business market.
It is one of the first tablets to come out with both Canonical’s Android operating system and Ubuntu. According to Vixtel, the Unity has a desktop and tablet mode: for example, it is possible to connect the tablet to a monitor, which then displays the desktop interface. The Australian company also states that business software is available for setting up an internal telephone network.
Vixtel has equipped the Unity with a 10.1 “screen with an unspecified ‘retina’ resolution and quad-core soc. Furthermore, 2 GB of ram is present and 64 GB for storage. There is support for wifi 802.11n, bluetooth 4.0 and 3g There is a 5-megapixel camera on board for photos, as well as an HDMI output, three USB ports and an Ethernet connection, which are probably on the supplied docking station.
The Unity comes out after Canonical indicated that it has shelved its plans with Ubuntu for Android. That would have to do with shifted priorities. Earlier, Canonical already showed the dual-boot capabilities with Android and Ubuntu.
