Audi will support both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
Audi has announced that it will build support for Google’s Android Auto as well as Apple’s CarPlay in its cars. From next year, the Audi software must support the services of Google and Apple.
According to Audi, the most important functions will be integrated in the Multi Media Interface that the car manufacturer has developed itself. Presumably, users can choose whether to work with the Android or iOS-based software by connecting an Android or iOS smartphone to the car, respectively. From next year, Android Auto and CarPlay should be integrated into Audi’s car software, but it is not yet clear which models are involved.
Google announced its in-car Android at the I/O developer conference held this week. Apple already announced CarPlay in March. Opening up the mobile operating systems for purposes other than smartphones and tablets is part of the ambition to generate as many users as possible.
Android Auto and CarPlay include functionality tailored for in-car use. For example, map services and multimedia can be used, while operation is possible, among other things, by voice. There are currently no cars on the market that have Android Auto or CarPlay on board.
