Audi wants to have three electric cars in its range by 2020
Audi has further explained its plans for the development of fully electric cars. By 2020 there should be three different models on the market. After that, electric variants of more series should be released.
Speaking at the brand’s annual press conference, Rupert Stadler, chairman of the board, said Audi has trained a team of 6,000 employees over the past three years to develop its electric cars. He also says that the brand is involved in the development of a public fast charging network.
In addition, Audi is setting up a new subsidiary for the development of autonomous cars. Autonomous Intelligent Driving GmbH is based in Munich and is working on techniques to be applied in different models of different brands. Audi also sees the techniques as an important part of the development of systems for autonomous transport, such as robot taxis. Audi says it is open to cooperation with ‘strong partners’ from the car and tech industry.
The first all-electric Audi is to be released in 2018 and will be an SUV that competes with Tesla’s Model X. A year later, the ‘e-tron sportback’, perhaps a model similar to the A5 and A7 series, is expected to take the lead. to compete with the Tesla Model S. It is unknown what the third model Audi is working on.
At the end of 2015, the brand already showed a concept of its first fully electric car. The Audi e-tron Quattro Concept is positioned between the Q7 and Q5. The model has a battery with a capacity of 95 kWh, good for a range of more than 500 km. Three electric motors deliver a total power of 320kW, or 435hp. There is a boost mode, with which more than 500 hp and 800 Nm of torque is available for a short time. In this mode, the sprint from 0-100 km/h takes 4.6 seconds.
