Display manufacturer AU Optronics has announced that it will start supplying 8k panels this year. These are very large image panels intended for use in televisions.

Deliveries will start during the first half of 2018, Digitimes writes. The panels come in sizes between 65 and 85 inches. It is not clear which screen technology is used for this, although AU Optronics mainly focuses on the market for LCD panels.

AUO expects such screens to have a market share of 10 percent by 2020. Liao Wei-lun, the leader of AUO’s video product division, expects the market share of 4k displays to exceed 40 percent by 2018. By way of comparison: in 2017 this was 30 percent.

Not only AUO is developing 8k screens. LG Display showed an 8k television that uses OLED technology at the beginning of this year. Samsung is also working on an 8k screen. The company uses its own qled technology for this. Sharp wants to have its own 8k televisions on the market by March.
