AU Optronics announces 85″ panel with 4k resolution and 240Hz refresh rate
Taiwanese screen manufacturer AU Optronics has announced a new 85″ panel. It is a 4K LCD with a refresh rate of 240Hz. It is not known when the first screens with this panel will appear on the market.
AU Electronics reported during a press conference that it will release a 4k240 screen with a screen diagonal of 85″, DigiTimes writes. The panel is currently not yet on the AUO website. The manufacturer does not share any details yet, although the manufacturer does report that it is screen will support a variable refresh rate. The screen could also display 96 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. There is also talk of HDR support. This 4k panel with 240Hz refresh rate is aimed at gamers and it could be the first 4k panel with such a refresh rate.
With the new panel from AU Optronics, manufacturers must use a DisplayPort 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 connector to deploy the full resolution and refresh rate, VideoCardz writes. DisplayPort 2.0 should support 4k240 natively, but HDMI 2.1 should use display stream compression. HDMI 2.1 is supported by the latest AMD and Nvidia GPUs, the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, but DisplayPort 2.0 is not currently used in consumer products.
AU Optronics will eventually deliver the upcoming 85″ panel to customers, who can then base their own screens on it, such as televisions. It is not yet known when this will happen.
