Atari wants to acquire Digital Eclipse studio that makes remasters of retro games
Atari wants to acquire Digital Eclipse, a developer that makes remasters of retro games. Digital Eclipse was founded in 1992 and has created more than 250 games or remasters. The acquisition amounts to a maximum of $20 million.
With the takeover wants Atari increase its internal development capacity, and use Digital Eclipse’s experience and technology to ‘focus on retro games’. That’s why Atari acquired Nightdive Studios earlier this year, a studio that made remasters of System Shock, Doom 64 and Quake.
Digital Eclipse’s recent work includes Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary, Mega Man Legacy Collection, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection and Disney Classic Games Collection. Last year, the studio released the Atari 50: The Anniversary Collection together with Atari.
The studio says retain the freedom to work on projects outside of Atari and, thanks to the acquisition, have more resources to carry out planned projects. In addition, Digital Eclipse will receive additional access to Atari’s games collection. Atari will pay $6.5 million for Digital Eclipse once the acquisition is final, with an additional $13.5 million bonus depending on Digital Eclipse’s performance. Atari expects to complete the acquisition in the coming days.
