Atari reveals Ataribox name and shows controller design
Atari has revealed the official name of its console, previously known only as the Ataribox. The device will be called Atari VCS, and the company plans to announce further details about the pre-order date in April. In addition, Atari shows prototypes of controllers.
Atari writes that the designation Ataribox was a working title. The console’s design is based on the classic Atari 2600, which came out in the 1970s. The new name, Atari VCS, is a reference to the original name of that console and stands for video computer system. In addition to the announcement of the pre-order date, Atari does not disclose any new details, for example, it says nothing about the games for the console.
The company does show images of controller prototypes, which show a gamepad next to a classic Atari controller previously shown. The company is currently showing it at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.
In December, it emerged that Atari had postponed the crowdfunding campaign for its console. At the time, the company said an important element was still missing, without going into details. Before that, it had already announced that the device will run on Linux and will be equipped with a custom AMD processor with Radeon GPU. The price should be between 249 and 299 dollars.
