Atari Considers Reviving Multiple Old Titles After Asteroids: Outpost
Atari will release an early access version of Asteroids: Outpost on Friday. This makes it the first game in a series of reissues of old titles. New versions of games such as Warlords, Adventure, Tempest and Missile Command should also be released in the near future.
Atari announced the new Asteroids in early February, but could not say when this version would be released. Asteroids: Outpost is an open world mmo survival game, quite different from the simple-looking game from the 1970s. The player is a deep space miner who must find, mine and protect valuable resources. This early access version is immediately accessible via Steam.
In the game, humanity has ended up in the far corners of the solar system. The asteroid belt in between is full of resources. The Belt is humanity’s new frontier and is a kind of wild west where the player is under constant fire from rival miners and can be hit by smaller asteroids that also have to be blasted away.
With the release of this version, the developer hopes to make a better game through feedback from the community. Atari wants to apply this strategy to several old games, notably Warlords, Adventure, Tempest and Missile Command. The company hopes to introduce these titles to a new generation of gamers.
