ASUS WRX80 motherboard for AMD Threadripper Pro CPUs appears online

An image of an ASUS WRX80 Pro WS Sage SE Wi-Fi motherboard has surfaced. This motherboard is for AMD Threadripper Pro processors, which include more PCIe lanes. These CPUs have been available for some time, but currently only for OEMs.

The ASUS WRX80 Pro WS Sage SE Wi-Fi hasn’t been officially announced yet, but tech website VideoCardz has published a render of the motherboard. This shows that the motherboard has eight memory slots and support for eight memory channels, among other things. The WRX80 Pro WS Sage also has seven PCIe 4.0 x16 slots. This is made possible by the Threadripper Pro CPUs, which have 128 PCIe lanes. The motherboard would use an SSI EEB form factor and features an actively cooled WRX80 chipset.

Threadripper Pro CPUs include additional PCIe lanes and memory channels over regular Threadripper chips. The Threadripper Pro CPUs therefore support a maximum of 2TB DDR4 memory. With regular variants, this is a maximum of 256GB. The Pro variants also get extra security features. For now, only Threadripper Pro 3000 processors based on the Zen 2 architecture are available. AMD released these chips in July.

Threadripper Pro CPUs are currently only available to OEMs. For example, AMD introduced the CPUs in a Lenovo prebuilt ThinkStation P620 PC. For that reason, there are no separate WRX80 motherboards available yet, although such motherboards have now appeared online, including the WRX80 Pro Sage SE from ASUS. An image of a Gigabyte WRX80 motherboard already appeared in December. AMD has not yet announced whether the company will also sell individual Threadripper Pro CPUs.
