ASUS will release its ROG Ally handheld PC in June. The device will receive an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip and will cost 799 euros. A cheaper variant with a ‘regular’ Ryzen Z1 chip will follow later, which has fewer CPU cores and a GPU with fewer compute units.

ASUS will ship the ROG Ally handheld with Z1 Extreme APU from June 13, the company said in a press release. Preorders of this model will begin on Thursday, May 11, according to the company. The version with a ‘regular’ Ryzen Z1 APU is expected to be available in the third quarter of this year. The company does not yet share a concrete release date for that model. It is also not yet known what the cheaper variant will cost.

The handheld will be equipped with an apu from the Ryzen Z1 series. The Extreme variant used in the ROG Ally gets eight Zen 4 cores and sixteen threads. According to the company, the chip achieves a boost clock of up to 5.1GHz. The integrated GPU is based on the RDNA 3 architecture and has twelve compute units for a total of 768 stream processors. The chip has a total of 24MB cache and a variable tdp of 9 to 30W. The non-Extreme variant of the Ryzen Z1, used in the later ROG Ally version, has six cores and a GPU with four compute units.

The ROG Ally also gets 16GB Lpddr5-6400 memory and comes with an M.2-2230 SSD with a capacity of 512GB and a PCIe 4.0 interface. The handheld also has a microSD card reader and Windows 11. The screen will have a diagonal of 7″, a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz.

The manufacturer also sells a dock for the ROG Ally. This dock can charge the device with 65W and can also be used to connect the handheld to a screen. It is not clear what this dock will cost. ASUS does not share recommended prices for this in its press release. The device can also be connected to an external GPU. ASUS uses its own ROG XG Mobile system for this, for which GPU modules are sold separately. ASUS introduced a variant with RTX 4090 laptop video card earlier this year, which costs $ 2000.
