Asus presents 5.2mm thick smartphone with 5000mAh battery

Asus has announced the Zenfone Max at its own event in India, a 5.2mm thick smartphone with a 5000mAh battery. It is the first time that a manufacturer has announced a thin phone with such a large battery.

Although other devices with large batteries are also available, they are often thicker than the regular versions with smaller batteries. For example, the Moto Maxx with a 3900mAh battery is 8.3mm, while the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 with a 4100mAh battery comes out at 7.9mm. The Gionee Marathon M4, a Chinaphone with a large battery, has a thickness of 10.2 mm. Devices with a thickness below 5.5 mm have so far had batteries with a maximum capacity of around 2500mAh.

Asus did not disclose many details of the Zenfone Max, which is a variant of the previously released Zenfone 2. The device runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 410. That is different from the Zenfone 2, which has an Intel Atom on board. It has a 13-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus, while the front-facing camera has a maximum resolution of 5 megapixels. The screen is 5.5″ in size, but the resolution is still unknown.

Asus has not disclosed other details, such as the dimensions, screen resolution and Android version. The device will be released in India in October 2015 for an unknown price. It is not yet clear whether the device will also appear in Europe.
