ASMedia is working on its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 controller, which the company aims to have ready sometime next year. It is expected that the first products with the new USB generation will be available on the market in 2020.

ASMedia demonstrates at the Computex trade show in Taiwan that it has the physical layer for USB 3.2 ready. The manufacturer bases its USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 controller on this physical layer. If the controller is ready in 2019, manufacturers should start implementing it in their products, which is not expected before 2020, AnandTech believes.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group published the specification for USB 3.2 in September last year. The new USB generation can deploy two 10Gbit/s lanes for a maximum throughput of 20Gbit/s, provided that certified USB-C cables for SuperSpeed USB 10Gbit/s are used and both the host and the devices have USB 3.2 chips. The technology is compatible with previous USB generations.
