Ars Technica: Microsoft won’t stop with Windows 10 Mobile despite rumors
Microsoft is not pulling the plug on Windows 10 Mobile and will release the Redstone 3 update for phones later this year. Ars Technica claims that based on its own sources after rumors from a Windows Central editor that Microsoft would stop with its mobile operating system.
Ars Technica bases itself on “several people within Microsoft who claim that phones that get the Creators Update will first get a ‘feature2 update’. At that point, the builds between desktop and mobile differ for the first time in some time. Later this year, desktop and mobile will get the same Windows builds again when Redstone 3 comes out, the next major update to Windows 10.
The rumors came into the world by Dennis Bednarz, an editor who works for Windows Central, among others, and who tweeted that the end for Windows 10 Mobile would approach and that there will be no Redstone 3 for the mobile OS. The rumor is unlikely, partly because HP and the British Wileyfox have both confirmed that they are working on new models with Windows 10 Mobile. Wileyfox’s will be released in August and HP’s is also scheduled for later this year.
Microsoft did confirm that many older Lumias, including the 930 and 1520, will no longer receive a feature update. The Lumia 950 series, Lumia 550 and HP Elite x3, among others, will still receive such major updates. Microsoft continues to support Windows 10 Mobile on its older smartphones with security patches.
