Arlo Announces Smart Home Security System and Will Support Matter
Arlo has introduced a new smart home security system consisting of a hub and an ‘all-in-one’ sensor that has eight different functions. The company will also support the universal Matter smart home standard.
Arlo speaks in his announcement about a ‘multisensor’ for security. This sensor can detect movement and changes in lighting and temperature, water leaks and opening doors or windows, among other things. The sensors also recognize the sirens of certain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and can alert users via an app when they go off. The sensor is about 2.8cm wide and runs on batteries.
The sensor is connected to a hub, which functions as a kind of controller for the security system. The hub has a built-in siren, an integrated keypad and supports NFC to enable and disable alarm functions. The hub can also work with the company’s security cameras and digital doorbells, the Arlo app, and the Arlo Secure plan. The company reports to The Verge that the security system will go on sale in the first half of 2022. The company will provide more details later, including a concrete release date and a suggested retail price.
Arlo also says it will support Matter. This is a universal smart home standard that has been developed since 2019 by companies such as Amazon, Apple and Google. Several companies and individuals are now participating in the project, including Huawei, IKEA, NXP, Signify and now also Arlo. Matter should make it possible for smart home devices from different manufacturers to communicate with each other as standard. The SDK for that standard should appear in the first half of 2022.
