Archos presents ‘smart display’ with Google Assistant

Archos has presented a ‘smart display’, a derivative of a speaker with screen. The French manufacturer has placed Android Oreo on it and uses Google Assistant for the speech interface.

The device is called Archos Hello and there will be two variants. The small version has a 7″ screen with a resolution that the manufacturer calls HD, while the larger version has an 8.4″ screen with a Full HD resolution. Both variants have 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Archos powers it all with an undisclosed quad-core processor.

In addition, there is a 4000mAh battery, so that it can also function without a charging cable. The Archos Hello runs Android Oreo, but not the modified version of Google’s operating system for ‘smart displays’. It is unknown why the French manufacturer has chosen this.

The Hello should be on the market this summer. Archos says that the version with 7″ screen should cost 129.99 euros, while consumers should count on 179.99 euros for the large version of the Hello. Archos is not the first with such a ‘smart display’. Google announced previous months ago, after which JBL, Sony, LG and Lenovo, among others, announced that they would use that software. Amazon already presented the Echo Show last year.

Update, 15:01: This article originally stated that Archos Hello would include a manufacturer-made voice assistant, but Archos Benelux has confirmed that it is Google Assistant.
