Ar app puts user in the middle of Apollo 11 mission to the moon
To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the moon landing, US pay-TV channel Smithsonian Channel has released an augmented reality app that allows users to experience the Apollo mission to the moon.
According to the Smithsonian Channel, the free ar app, which is available for both iOS and Android, puts the user in the middle of the lunar missions of the 1960s. The app gives users a close-up experience of key milestones from the dawn of the space age.
With the app called Apollo’s Moon Shot AR, users can launch their own Saturn V rocket and sit in the Lunar Command Module of Apollo 11. It is also possible to follow in the footsteps of Neil Armstrong and explore the lunar landscape in a spacesuit. .
Two games are part of the app: Moon Shot Challenge and Lunar Landing Challenge. In doing so, players must test their ability to navigate to the moon, avoiding craters and large boulders on the spot to ensure a soft landing.
An interactive timeline is also available to learn more about the events of the Apollo program, including quizzes, videos and facts. There are also 3D scans of Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit and the Lunar Command Module, as well as close-ups of the astronauts’ handwritten messages.
Apollo’s Moon Shot AR app was created by the Smithsonian Channel to complement the six-part TV series Apollo’s Moon Shot, which airs on the channel. The channel has created the app in collaboration with the Polish developer Immersion, who specializes in making VR and AR applications for museums, for example.
