‘Apple works with Visa, MasterCard and American Express on mobile payments’
Apple has reached agreements with credit card companies Visa, MasterCard and American Express about a mobile payment system that will be introduced at the same time as the iPhone 6. The payment system works with nfc and would make it possible to pay with the iPhone in stores.
There have been rumors for some time about the arrival of a mobile wallet from Apple. According to Recode, the Cupertino company has now reached an agreement with, among others, American Express. Bloomberg adds Visa and MasterCard to this list and, according to this site, agreements have also been reached with major banks and retail chains, although it is not clear which names are involved.
Apple is expected to introduce its payment system on September 9 along with new iPhones. According to rumors, the new smartphone generation contains an NFC chip, which makes it possible to pay contactless in stores. For authentication, the system would use Touch ID, the fingerprint recognition system that is already in the home button of the iPhone 5S and will also be integrated in the iPhone 6 models.
In the latest quarterly results, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that 800 million iTunes accounts have been created, most of which are linked to a credit card. This would make Apple an interesting party for credit card companies to work with. Other companies are also trying to roll out mobile payment systems, such as Paypal, Google and banks, but they are struggling to create a widely supported platform.
