Apple has now released tvOS 13 after iOS 13.1 and iPadOS 13.1. This version of the operating system for the last two Apple TV set-top boxes introduces a number of innovations, including the option to use PlayStation 4 and Xbox controllers.

tvOS 13 allows users to connect their PlayStation DualShock 4 or Xbox One controllers to the Apple TV set-top boxes. Both controllers can be connected to the set-top box via bluetooth. By the way, the Xbox controller is about the controller that has been available since the arrival of the Xbox One S. With the arrival of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, the game controllers from Sony and Microsoft can also be used on iPhones and iPads.

The arrival of this support is not entirely coincidental in terms of timing; Apple Arcade recently came out for iOS 13. With the release of tvOS 13, the games from this subscription can also be played on the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV from 2015. This game subscription service has its own app on the Apple TV, instead of a separate place in the tvOS App Store. Some Apple Arcade games require a game controller.

With support for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers, Apple TV owners no longer need to use third-party Bluetooth controllers or the included touch-sensitive controller. When the Apple TV came out, developers had to give their games support for this touch-sensitive remote. However, Apple dropped that requirement in 2016. This limited support for controllers has often been the target of criticism.

The release of tvOS 13 also brings a number of other improvements, such as a refreshed home screen, multi-user support and an option called ‘wireless audio sync’ in the calibration menu. This should lead to voices from video material being synchronized with wirelessly connected speakers.
