Apple TV 4K includes fan
The Apple TV 4K is actively cooled. At the bottom of the housing is a fan, according to a teardown from iFixit. Earlier models of the media player were passively cooled. The box contains the A10X soc, which is passively cooled in the iPad Pro models.
Apple may make the soc work harder in the Apple TV 4K, requiring active cooling. The material of the housing probably also plays a role in the choice of a fan. The iPad Pro has an aluminum housing that can be used to dissipate the heat from the soc. The Apple TV 4K is made of plastic.
Ifixit notes that the fan is combined with a heatsink like it was already in the previous Apple TV. The teardown also shows that the media player has 3GB of lpddr4 memory from SK Hynix. The website gives the Apple TV 4K a score of 8 when it comes to repairability.
Apple released the Apple TV 4K in the Benelux last week. The box costs 199 euros with 32GB of storage space and the 64GB variant costs 219 euros. The media player can play 4k movies and supports HDR playback. Apple offers 4k movies through iTunes for the same price as HD movies.
