Apple to release iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max on September 20
Apple presents the successors of the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max with the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max. The new models have almost the same dimensions, but get more cameras and a faster SOC. The cheapest model costs 809 euros.
Apple places a lot of emphasis on the photo and video capabilities of the new iPhones. All devices now have multiple cameras. The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max each have three 12-megapixel cameras on the back. In addition to the regular camera, there is a telephoto and an ultra-wide angle camera. The focal lengths in full-frame equivalent are 13mm, 26mm and 52mm. The iPhone 11 lacks the telephoto camera. This device does have the same primary and wide-angle camera as the Pro models.
The primary camera and telephoto camera have optical image stabilization, and for the primary camera, Apple promises improved autofocus, as the entire sensor contains focus pixels. Both the primary camera and the wide-angle camera can record 4k video at 60fps. Apple also upgrades the front camera. It now has a 12-megapixel resolution, can film in 4k resolution at 30fps with high dynamic range and there is a slow-motion movie function available.
Apple also comes with a night mode for the iPhones, which should allow photos in poor light conditions by leaving the shutter open for a long time. In the fall, iOS 13 will receive an update that will bring a new feature to iPhones called Deep Fusion. Images from multiple cameras are combined into one shot.
The dimensions of the new iPhones are comparable to those of their predecessors. The iPhone 11 has a 6.1″ LCD, the 11 Pro gets a 5.8″ OLED screen and the 11 Pro Max has a 6.5″ OLED panel. The iPhones are made of metal and glass, the Pro models have a new matte finish and the regular iPhone 11 is available in six colors.
In the Pro versions, Apple uses a new OLED panel, which can display the dci-p3 color space and has a peak brightness of 1200cd/m2. There is also support for HDR10 and Dolby Vision. The resolution of the panels is unchanged, but Apple is now talking about Super Retina XDR displays. The new iPhones no longer have 3D Touch, but all have Haptic Touch, with which 3D Touch can be simulated.
Like their predecessors, the new models retain a notch in the screen and have Face ID for biometric unlocking, a fingerprint scanner is again missing. According to Apple, unlocking with facial recognition on the iPhone 11 devices works faster and can be done from multiple angles.
The three iPhone 11 models will receive the Apple-designed A13 Bionic soc, which is made on a second-generation 7nm process and contains 8.5 billion transistors. The chip has a hexacore CPU with two powerful cores and four economical cores. The GPU consists of four cores and the Neural Engine has eight cores. The construction of the A13 Bionic is therefore the same as that of last year’s A12 Bionic, but Apple claims that the performance has improved considerably while consumption has decreased.
Apple also states that the new iPhones have a longer battery life than their predecessor. Exact details about the battery capacity are not yet known, but according to the manufacturer, the iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max will last 1, 4 and 5 hours longer than the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, respectively. The devices support wireless charging, but there is no option to wirelessly charge other devices with the iPhones. Rumor has it that this feature was scrapped at the last minute. Apple supplies an 18W fast charger with the Pro models.
Apple will not introduce any iPhones with a 5G modem this year. Many Android device manufacturers have already done so. However, the availability of 5g networks is still very limited and current modems often have limited 5g support.
The iPhone 11 costs from 809 euros in the version with 64GB of flash storage. That is 50 euros less than the introductory price of the iPhone XR last year. At 1159 and 1259 euros, the starting prices of the Pro models are equal to the prices of the XS models last year.
