Apple takes over site with personal book tips
Apple has acquired Booklamp. This was a now defunct site that made recommendations to users for books based on their reading habits. Apple would like to compete with Amazon with the acquisition.
The Booklamp website already closed its doors in April, but so far the company had not given any explicit reason. However, Apple has now confirmed to TechCrunch that it has acquired Booklamp.
Booklamp advised book readers for new books to read, based on their reading behaviour. This included the writing style of a writer, as well as the content of the book. In addition, Booklamp was a social network where users could collect points by reading books.
It is not immediately clear what Apple wants to achieve with the acquisition: Apple says it does not comment on acquisitions of ‘smaller companies’. One TechCrunch source, however, would have suggested that Apple wants to use the acquisition to compete with Amazon. Amazon, which also recommends new books to users, would also have been interested in acquiring Booklamp.
