Apple stops MobileMe service
Apple has officially closed its MobileMe service. The company gives its customers some time to transfer accounts to its successor: iCloud. It was already known that in time the plug was pulled from MobileMe.
The associated MobileMe website informs users that the service has been shut down. However, there is still a possibility to log in, in case a user wants to transfer his account to iCloud, the Apple service that has taken over the function of MobileMe. This means that despite the shutdown of the service, no data has been lost yet, although the ability to transfer content is available for a limited time. It is unknown how long this period will last.
Although it is still possible to transfer accounts, synchronizing content via MobileMe is no longer possible. Several apps that belong to the cloud sync service have also disappeared from the App Store.
Apple previously announced that it would pull the plug on the MobileMe service on June 30. To help move accounts to iCloud, the Cupertino company released a free update to the Snow Leopard version of OS X for MobileMe customers. The iCloud service came out last year and offers more options than MobileMe. For example, music purchased in iTunes can be synced, just like ebooks or applications. iCloud is also free to use, although the amount of space available without paying was limited by Apple when the service was introduced.
