Apple: Shazam identifies over 1 billion songs every month
Music recognition service Shazam identifies more than one billion songs every month. That’s what Apple says, according to 9to5Mac and other American news websites. The service is also said to have recognized the 50 billionth song this month.
At the end of 2020, music recognition service Shazam announced that it has 200 million monthly active users. According to 9to5Mac, the most popular song back then, Dance Monkey by Tones and I, is still the most searched-for song today.
At the latest edition of WWDC, Apple revealed that it would be making a Shazam API available to developers in iOS 15 via ShazamKit. Other sounds can also be recognized in developers’ apps via this api.
Apple acquired Shazam in 2017. The company then stated that Shazam would be a good fit with Apple Music’s services. No acquisition amount was mentioned, but according to sources that amount would have been around 300 million British pounds.
A few months after Apple’s acquisition of Shazam, the European Commission launched an in-depth investigation into the acquisition. The committee was then concerned that the acquisition would allow Apple to obtain sensitive data about customers of competitors. In September 2018, the European Commission ruled that Apple’s acquisition of Shazam would not harm competition.
