Apple removes iPod Classic from range

Apple has retired the iPod Classic: the music player with the well-known click wheel has disappeared from the range of the Cupertino group. The first generation of the iPod appeared in 2001.

Without publicity, Apple has ended sales of the iPod Classic, along with the introduction of new iPhones and the Apple Watch. The site only lists the iPod Shuffle, Nano and Touch. This reduces the maximum storage amount of Apple’s music players to 64GB; the iPod Classic had a 1.8″ hard drive with a storage capacity of 160GB on board.

There have been six generations of the iPod Classic model; The player received the Classic designation in 2007. The first iPod appeared in 2001 and the well-known round control wheel was not yet touch-sensitive, the LCD was monochrome and the hard disk had a storage capacity of 5GB. With the third generation in 2003, the iPod got its Touch Wheel and in 2004 the first model with color screen appeared, then under the name iPod Photo.

The iPod as it evolved into the Classic was at the heart of Apple’s current success. In recent years, however, the sales of music players, which are being supplanted by smartphones, have fallen. The stop of sales therefore comes as no surprise.
