Apple releases Swift programming language source code under open source license

Apple on Thursday made the programming language Swift open-source after earlier promises. With that, Apple invites the community to make Swift 2 better by contributing to the development of the language.

The Swift site itself states that “small, incremental changes” are preferred. Apple promised in June this year that it would make the programming language open-source so that other manufacturers can adopt the language.

The software is released under the Apache license and is available to OS X and iOS developers. The language can be used to develop desktop applications, but also iOS applications. There are also Linux binaries and the code can be compiled on any platform. There is also a Git repository.
