Apple releases improved version of Game Porting Toolkit
Apple has released Game Porting Toolkit 2, an improved version of its porting software that lets developers more easily bring Windows games to Macs. The second version has improved Windows compatibility and better debugging tools.
The improvements are according to Apple based on what developers asked about most. For example, Game Porting Toolkit 2 has “improved compatibility with Windows games, powerful new shader debugging tools, and Xcode updates.” Game makers can use the same code and shaders to release games for Windows, iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple says.
Game Porting Toolkit first appeared last year and is similar to Valve's Proton tool. For example, the toolkit captures the DirectX 12 Windows API calls for control and audio, among other things, and translates them to the macOS APIs. The toolkit is not intended for consumer use and is part of macOS Sequoia.
