Apple has made parts of its operating system macOS 10.12 Sierra available under an open source license. These are the parts that together form the Darwin project of the Cupertino company.

The release of the Darwin source code, now two months after the release of macOS Sierra, is no exception. In December last year, for example, this happened for 10.11 El Capitan. The release gives developers insight into the deeper layers of OS, which can help them develop software for macOS.

Darwin is the Unix operating system that Apple first released in 1999 and contains the core components of macOS. iOS, watchOS and tvOS are also based on it. It contains code from Apple itself, from BSD and from Nextstep, among others.

The open source project overview page does not list the open source code for macOS 10.12 Sierra at the time of writing, but the page can already be reached via a direct link.
