In iOS 12.1, Apple has enabled the performance reduction feature to prevent unexpected device outages for the iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 8. They didn’t have that feature until now.

Reducing performance to prevent the device from dropping out will be less noticeable than on older iPhones, according to Apple, due to the design of the hardware and software. Despite this, according to the manufacturer, the function was not necessary until iOS 12.1.

Available for older iPhones since iOS 11.3, the feature gives users the choice of either reducing performance to avoid dropouts or keeping performance at its best at the risk of a phone crash. Before iOS 11.3, Apple reduced performance if the battery went down without saying anything, something that the manufacturer came under much criticism.

The problem occurs when the battery ages and can no longer handle the peak load of the soc. The iPhone X and 8, according to a previous statement, would not suffer from this problem due to their newer hardware, so the feature was not included in the iOS releases for this phone.
