Apple postpones fix for FaceTime bug in group calling until next week

Apple has fixed the vulnerability in FaceTime group calling, but will not release the software update for it this week, as initially reported, but next week. The company apologizes for the problem.

The fix has been implemented for the servers, Apple reports to MacRumors, and next week a software update will enable group calling via FaceTime again. The company apologizes to customers and appreciates the patience for the period of remedy.

On Tuesday, Apple decided to disable FaceTime’s group calling feature after a security vulnerability came to light. By simply creating a group call during the ringing of a private call by adding their own phone number, a malicious person could listen in on audio and see video without the recipient having to answer or decline the call.

The bug was found by a 14-year-old boy and Apple ignored his mother’s reports. Apple thanks the family for pointing out the vulnerability. The company promises to improve its procedures for receiving and escalating security alerts “to make sure they reach the right people as quickly as possible.”
