Apple has “paused” certain types of ads on the pages of apps in the App Store. Gambling app apps became visible on app pages, much to the anger of many of the developers.

The new kind of ads are on the You Might Also Like or Suggestions For You section of an app page. Apple says to MacRumors that it has paused ads for gambling apps and “various other categories.” It is unknown if the company will change its policy on these ads.

The new category of ads met resistance this week. Several developers spoke out against the advent of advertising for gambling services in the App Store. Advertisements for gambling apps were also added to apps that specifically target gambling addiction.

It was already known that the new ad spots would go live this week. Apple wants to increase the turnover of its division that provides services. For years, Apple has been transforming itself from a company that only sells products to a company that also lives on services. Of course the subscriptions such as Music, TV+ and iCloud are part of this, but also the advertisements.
