Apple must pay Samsung fine for too few OLED panels purchased
Apple is said to have purchased too little of the OLED panels ordered from Samsung Display, so the latter wants to see a fine on the table. The fact that Apple has purchased fewer OLED panels is probably due to the disappointing iPhone sales.
That reports the South Korean website ETNews, which is known to have sources within Samsung. Apple has a contract with Samsung Display for the supply of OLED panels that will be used on the iPhone X generation, but Apple has recently seen a decline in sales from iPhones. This indicates that the number of iPhones delivered is declining, but because the company no longer discloses sales figures, it cannot be said with certainty.
Because Samsung Display has invested in an OLED factory for Apple’s orders, and Apple has reportedly not purchased enough panels, the Korean display manufacturer wants to see compensation. The two companies would have been in talks with each other several times before that. According to ETNews, the factory that Samsung Display uses to produce OLED panels for Apple is shut down about half the time, and so sales have also fallen by half.
According to ETNews, the fine requested by Samsung Display would be ‘hundreds of billions’ of won, something that probably translates into hundreds of millions of euros. For now, however, Apple would not agree to that. However, the two companies have not publicly commented on the matter.
