Apple is being sued for discrimination in Apple Watch measurements

Apple is being sued in the United States for discrimination with the Apple Watch. According to the prosecutor, the Saturation app in the smartwatch does not register the amount of oxygen in the blood properly in people with a dark skin color.

The lawsuit was filed in New York by Alex Morales, Apple Insider reports. Morales claims that researchers have shown that the Apple Watch is less able to measure blood oxygen levels in people with dark skin. Morales believes that Apple has not informed its customers about this and is therefore violating the law.

According to Morales, incorrectly reporting oxygen percentages can be dangerous. People can receive good values ​​through their Apple Watch, even though they are not correct. The lawsuit states that the pandemic has made it clear that the measurements taken by the Saturation app differ in people with a dark skin color.

It is not the first time that the Apple Watch does not measure properly. In 2015, Apple came under controversy because the heart rate monitor worked less well for people who have a tattoo on their wrist. Apple eventually confirmed this and advised people against using an Apple Watch if the wearer has a tattoo in that spot.
