Apple investigating reports of swollen iPhone 8 Plus batteries
Apple has launched an investigation into reports of swollen iPhone 8 batteries. With one user this would have happened during charging, with another customer the device came out of the box swollen. Due to the swollen batteries, the housing comes loose.
Apple tells MacRumors that it is aware of the reports and that an investigation is underway, but does not provide details on when it could be completed. In the cases known so far, the swollen battery has caused the glue between the display and the rest of the housing to come loose.
There are up to one or two reports from Taiwan and one from Japan, making the number of reports relatively low and unlikely to be anything wrong with all iPhone 8 Plus models. With the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 last year, shortly after its release in some countries, there were already tens to hundreds of reports of batteries catching fire. However, it is possible that, for example, there is a manufacturing defect in a small part of the batteries used.
Apple released the iPhone 8 Plus a week and a half ago. The device has a battery with a capacity of 2675mAh, smaller than the 2900mAh battery from its predecessor iPhone 7 Plus.
