‘Apple introduces cheap iMac for education’ – update

Apple plans to release a 21.5-inch iMac this month for education customers. The all-in-one should cost less than $1,000, but has less muscle than the current entry-level model.

The new iMac model would have a 21.5″ display and feature a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor with a clock speed of 3.06GHz, so reports website 9to5 based on an anonymous source. The working memory would be 2GB, while the hard drive offers a storage capacity of 250GB.

The graphical work in the ‘stripped down’ iMac is performed by an AMD Radeon HD 6750M GPU with 256MB of RAM. Apple would like to quietly release this model around August 16, for a price of less than $ 1000. The new iMac model would be aimed primarily at education customers.

The current entry-level model, the Apple iMac 21.5″, introduced in May, currently costs around $1,200, but has better specifications. This all-in-one has a quad-core 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, a 500GB harddisk and a Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB video memory.

Update 2:30 PM: Apple now has the full specifications of the new model on its website placed. The iMac does not have a Thunderbolt input, but it does have a mini display port.
