According to the Financial Times, Apple has been working on a prototype for VR glasses for months. The company would employ a large team for this, consisting of ex-employees of Microsoft and Lytro, among others. Apple is also said to have bought another VR startup.

The newspaper is said to have obtained this information from several individuals who would have knowledge of the project. According to these sources, Apple recently bought another VR startup, the company Flyby Media. This previously worked with Google on a 3D positioning project. Hundreds of employees would also be working on making a product that can compete with Oculus’ Rift or Microsoft’s HoloLens.

It is not yet clear which way Apple’s product will go and whether it will be virtual reality or augmented reality. Apple has not commented on the matter to the Financial Times, only confirming that the company “purchases small businesses more often, rather than discussing what it intends to do with them.” A week ago, it was announced that Apple has hired virtual reality expert Doug Bowman, reinforcing existing suspicions of a VR project.
