Apple ends Bootcamp support for Windows 7 on last MacBooks

Apple has discontinued the ability to install Windows 7 via Bootcamp on the newly released MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. This means that when getting a new MacBook, users must use virtualization software or upgrade to Windows 8.

Apple writes that on the latest support pages with an explanation of how to install Windows via Bootcamp. All models introduced this year have to do without Windows 7 support. These are the 13″ MacBook Pro and the 11″ and 13″ MacBook Air.

Apple appears to be using the same strategy it did when the company ended BootCamp support for Windows XP and Vista on MacBooks released in mid-2010, Apple Insider reported.

Windows 7 enthusiasts can still use virtualization software, such as Parallels Desktop 10, VMWare Fusion 7, and Virtual Box 4.3.26. In addition, Microsoft announced a free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 and 8.1 users.
