Apple doubles maximum allowed app size to 4GB

Apple has doubled the file size limit for apps in the App Store from 2 to 4GB. The expansion will allow game developers in particular to release games that require more storage on an iOS device.

Since 2008, the maximum size of an app in the App Store was limited to 2GB. Apple has doubled this limit for so-called binaries in the App Store to 4GB, the company has informed developers. For downloads via mobile networks, the limit remains at 100MB, so that large apps or games must be downloaded via a WiFi connection.

The expansion is good news for game developers in particular. Some developers used a mechanism to load massive levels in the background during gameplay, but not every developer has this capability. Google has been using a 4GB limit on Android for Android games and apps for some time.
