Apple discontinued the iPod Classic because it couldn’t get the parts anymore
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Apple could no longer make the iPod Classic because manufacturers could no longer supply the necessary parts. If Apple wanted to keep the music player in its range, a complete redesign was needed.
Cook gave the reason for discontinuing the iPod Classic during his interview at WSJD’s Live conference. “We couldn’t get parts anymore. They don’t make them anymore,” he said of ending production. It is unclear which parts are involved.
If Apple had wanted to continue with the player, it could have, but then it would be a completely new product, Cook claims, according to Engadget. “That would require an enormous amount of technical work.” The reason Apple has not opted for this is that there are too few people who want the player any longer.
Apple quietly stopped selling the iPod Classic in mid-September. The iPod Classic was the basis of Apple’s current success, but music player sales have slumped due to the rise of the smartphone.
