Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed in a video interview with Bloomberg that the company is working on autonomous systems that should make self-driving cars possible. Apple does not give concrete details about cars yet.

“We’re focusing on autonomous systems, self-driving cars are a clear goal for that,” Tim Cook told Bloomberg. According to the Apple CEO, creating systems for autonomous cars is one of the biggest challenges when it comes to artificial intelligence. He speaks of ‘the mother of all AI projects’.

At the product level, Cook does not want to give any information yet, but he says that the underlying technology is very important to Apple. The Apple CEO emphasizes that the auto industry is going through several major changes. According to Cook, not only autonomous driving, but also fully electric driving is a ‘wonderful experience’. He also mentions ride sharing as an important change.

It has been known for years that Apple is working on technology for self-driving cars. Officially, however, the manufacturer from Cupertino did not announce anything about it before. In April, the iPhone maker was granted a license to test self-driving cars in California. Last year, a German newspaper reported that Apple plans to offer self-driving cars through a carsharing service.

According to Bloomberg, Apple initially planned to make its own car, but it was decided late last year not to do so and to shift its focus to creating underlying systems for self-driving cars. The iPhone maker is said to have hired a thousand people for ‘Project Titan’ after the plan was conceived in 2014 to come up with a self-driving car. Hundreds of people would have been fired due to the changed plans.
